從2017年下半年開始，全國各地教育主管部門先后公示申報升格、更名和轉設的高校名單，共有數十所高校位列其中，新一輪高校更名大幕正式拉開。
繼各省上報后，1月20日，教育部發展規劃司正式公布了2017年度申報設置列入專家考察高等學校名單，共有46所高校入選，其中包括新設本科學校（21所）、更名大學（16所）、獨立學院轉設為獨立設置民辦本科學校（6所）和同層次更名（3所）。
不過，這只是列入專家考察的高校名單，最終結果還需要全國高等學校設置評議委員會的最終評議。
從列入現場考察的高校名單來看，廣東、廣西、河南和山東高校入選數量最多，各有4所。
福建、湖北、吉林、陜西和四川各有3所，其他省份入選高校都在3所以下。
按照教育部規定，接到高校設置申請后，教育部啟動形式審查程序，納入各地“十三五”高等學校設置規劃且辦學條件達到設置標準者，經公示后進入高評委專家考察和評議環節。
高評委將對照“十三五”高等學校設置規劃、設置標準等對擬設置本科學校進行考察和評議，評議結果報經教育部黨組審定并向社會公示無異議后，辦理批準文件。
根據往年的情況，進入高評委專家考察環節后，最終的評議結果也將很快揭曉。
